Synopsis:
“A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached. It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend.”
From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Bold, daring, and lethal, assassin Celaena Sardothien won the brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.
Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.
Then, an unspeakable tragedy shatters Celaena’s world. She must decide once and for all where her loyalties lie . . . and whom she will fight for.
Favorite Lines:
“Some things you hear with your ears. Others, you hear with your heart.”
“It was like coming home or being born or suddenly finding an entire half of herself that had been missing.”
“The best lies were always mixed with truth.”
My Opinion:
As I had mentioned in my Throne of Glass review, this is a reread for me but my first time writing a review for the series.
Let me just start by saying… this book will break your heart. No spoilers (obviously) but be prepared to have your heart torn out and shredded up right in front of you. Crown of Midnight follows Celaena as she navigates court after winning the competition to become the king’s champion. Not only is she doing the king’s dirty work but also trying to figure out a much bigger mystery that could potentially destroy the continent and maybe even the world if it isn’t solved.
Maas does an amazing job at expanding the world she has created in this series. It always leaves me in awe how elaborate her writing can be. She spends time on little details that paint the scenes vividly in your mind while you read the story. You will feel like you are right there next to your favorite characters watching the story play out. She also excels at weaving in small details throughout the series that seem insignificant in the moment but might be tied in later and have a huge impact on the story line, so pay attention! The character development is impressive, as always, and I am excited for where the characters are going to go in the rest of the series; specifically the next book. Remember, I have read this series, so I know what is coming. I won’t spoil it for you but the next book, Heir of Fire, might be my favorite book in this series.
There isn’t anything I don’t like about this book. Maas does a fantastic job in creating this world and making her characters so relatable and lovable. Even the not-so-nice one’s have some quality that is relatable. She makes them so, very human; despite who they are or where they have been.
Summary:
Overall, I love this whole series so I am sure I am 100% bias, but I hope you will consider reading this book and the rest of the series so that you can fall in love with it as much as I did. Happy reading!
